Speaking of the sirens, are they only used for tornadoes or are they potentially used for other warnings?  Every time I hear them testing I always wonder how we're supposed to know if its a test or an actual emergency.

They always call and email me when a test is going to happen.

Well, I guess they don't have my email or phone number, because I never get that alert.  Who would I have to call to get that info to them?
Do yall know if they use the sirens for other stuff besides tornadoes.  Say a train derailed and was spilling chemicals.  Would they use it to let you know about something like that?

I believe they are only tornado warning.  If it was for all other things, you wouldn't know whether to hide under a table, run to the bomb shelter, or get out your gas mask.  Beside if they went off all the time for every event in the community, Top would be bitchin' :)

I know after Katrina we still had water(no electricity)..I suppose city ran generators to keep water coming. But I still went and got FEMA water and ice and set up my command center under magnolia tree in front yard watching my neighbors with big huge suvs waste their gas..I putted down to Claiborne Hill on my old M/C and loaded up..Saved gas in cars...Ran generator at night to keep 1 a/c going...Heat in daytime was bad but with that one 10,000 btu a/c it keep one room nice and cool to sleep in..

Central water used tractors with the PTO running the pumps in some areas.

I was like you Top.  Used an inverter off of the car to run a fan and small TV.  Set up my center under some big trees with a big box smoker, grills and propane burners etc. and all of the neighbors would bring what was slowing thawing in the freezers to cook.  I believe that was the best anyone in our immediate area had eat in a long time as well as finding out who were good folks and users!

Used coiled up water hoses to garner heat and take a shower at evening time.

Could go on and on............

OK makes sense..Now we have to get a radio..Who listens to radio outside their car anymore..I'll think I'll just depend on my bad knee. If he hurts watch out..Based on past weather patterns why do we even need sirens..

If you have an android or iphone, there are plenty of free apps that give severe weather alerts. I downloaded a free one the day of the storm because I didn't have batteries for my weather radio. I chose the one that's connected with NOAA Weather. Within 5 minutes, I got an alert, and several more afterward. And you don't have to listen (or read about) a jillion other places having weather problems. You can choose Picayune or whatever location you need to get reports on.
