They fill in that pond and dug a run off area to the west of the old pond.  As long as  the water runs off and drains, I see nothing wrong with the plan.  It is not as if they were filling in a toxic waste site.  Somewhere along the planning route, I am pretty sure there were some engineers involved in the planning.  But then again, this is PRC.

If memory serves me right, there were ENGINEERS involved when the City built the new Fire Station in a flood zone, too.

So they are building a restaurant on top of a retention pond.  Sounds looney to me.  What if they have to service that pond in the future?  Of all the locations in Picayune, they had to build on top of a retention pond???

That pond was an area of flat ground when the shopping center was built years ago. A hole, aka retention pond was dug to help handle excessive rain runoff. That hole has now been filled to build a building in that location and another hole dug somewhere else to handle the water. What is the big deal? It was not a natural wetlands area. It was a man made hole to hold water in heavy rains to help keep the parking lot from flooding. Lets just be happy that in some small way that our city is moving forward. A national chain business looked at our city and what we have to offer and decided it was a worthy investment. To me, that is a reason to be proud instead of trying to find ways to diminish it.
And Greg, you had a really good post going until your backhanded slap at PRC. We, in PRC didn't build a whole parish below sea level, we just filled in a man made retention pond to build a restaurant. We are glad you moved up to higher ground and hope more of you come up as well so we can keep moving the area forward. The place is better for it.

Good post Zenith.  I was told that pond was there, to catch the overflow of water, that floods the residential area, behind Dirt Cheap.  The article in the paper, indicated, that the pond was not working or not connected to the trenches, that would deflect the flow of water into that subdivision.  That subdivision behind Dirt Cheap, always floods, but additional FEMA work has been done in the area to help those homeowners.  That information was brought into the news, when that newest apartment complex was built along the western border of that parking lot.  There were lots of objections to that complex to being built in the area, due to the flooding.  That contractor had to do a lot of dirt work, to get that complex built.

I think that Applebees is a fine addition to our community.

If they run out of beer, they can tap the pond.

Now don't get me wrong I am all for Applebees coming to Picayune, but it was funny some one posted about a toxic waste sight around the new building sigh.  About 8 years ago DEQ installed a ground water remediation station right up  43S from that building sigh.  It was next to the Spur station.  They were getting a over powering smell out of the groung from around the Spur station and the fire dept.  was called to check it out.  I went on about 3 calls my self.  DEQ pumped ground water out of the ground for over 5 years.  I know this is true because I help build it,  If you look right north of the gas station, you can see were it was.  I never was told what was in the ground around there, but was told they would tell me if I had a need to know.  Not trying to be smart, just telling you what I know.  Old Goat.

The problem was possibly a leaking fuel tank in the area.  Now, they have to be installed with containment in case of leak. But way back when, it was possible to buy a piece of land that was cheap, but then find that you had to pay tripple the price you paid for remediation.  I used to do some photography and promotional work for LOMA -- Louisiana Oil Marketers Association.   They would discuss this topic to great legnth at their conferences.  Now, tanks have to be installed along with groundwater sample wells -- plus containment.
